Course Summary:

This course introduces students to the rich and diverse world of Urdu language and literature. From its historical roots to its contemporary relevance, students will embark on a journey exploring the sounds, scripts, stories, and sentiments of the Urdu world.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, learners will:

1. 1. Recognize and write the Urdu script, Nastaliq.


2. 2. Communicate using basic Urdu vocabulary and grammar structures.


3. 3. Understand the historical development and significance of Urdu as a lingua franca in South Asia.


4. 4. Appreciate the major genres of Urdu literature, including poetry (Ghazal, Nazm), prose, and drama.


5. 5. Engage with seminal works of renowned Urdu poets and writers like Mir Taqi Mir, Mirza Ghalib, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, and Saadat Hasan Manto.


6. 6. Develop an awareness of the socio-cultural contexts in which Urdu has flourished.
